Description

France, French school, c. 1850–1880. Oil on wood panel in the manner of Jean-Baptiste Greuze, later 20th-c. gilt frame.

Description

An intimate French genre scene of a young woman seated with a wicker basket of eggs, painted on panel in the 19th century after the celebrated 18th-century works of Greuze. The delicate face, soft drapery and warm glazes recall the world of Louis-XVI interiors, while the later gilded frame with red velvet mount gives the piece real presence on a wall. A charming, romantic accent for a hallway, dressing room or classic salon.

Dimensions

Panel (visible): approx. 20 × 16 cm

Frame: approx. 38 × 34 cm

Condition report

Oil on wood panel in stable condition with even, age-consistent craquelure.

Glossy, slightly yellowed varnish; minor surface scuffs and tiny losses at the edges.

Panel sits in a later 20th-c. gilt wooden frame with red velvet slip; frame with light wear and small knocks consistent with age and use.

Ready to hang.

Collectors’ note

19th-century French “after the 18th century” panels like this were favourites in bourgeois salons and still work beautifully in contemporary interiors where you want a whisper of Rococo without formality. Especially attractive as part of a small wall of framed objects and mirrors.
